The University of Texas Pan American (UTPA) seeks applicants for an Assistant Professor, Tenure-Track position in Dance (F09/10-42).
Primary responsibilities include teaching all levels of ballet and modern dance technique. An MFA is required. Applicants should have awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience. Other responsibilities will be the following: jazz/tap, dance pedagogy, composition, improvisation and dance appreciation. Qualified candidates must provide guidance and direction of student concerts, choreography for advanced student company, student advising, and student recruitment. Additional expectations are to serve on committees at the Department, College and University levels and engage in effective grant/fundraising activities. Excellence in teaching, continued creativity and professional activity will be a requirement for retention, promotion and consideration of tenure. Candidates must address the needs of a student population of great diversity - in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation - through course materials, teaching strategies and advisement. This appointment is effective Fall 2010. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated effectiveness in classroom teaching at the university level and the ability to relate to students. UTPA is located in the Rio Grande Valley, a river delta of the Rio Grande at the tropical tip of Texas, 75 miles from the Gulf of Mexico and the resort area of South Padre Island. The main campus of the University is in Edinburg, Texas, population 50,000, the county seat of Hidalgo County, twenty minutes from the U.S./Mexico border. Six miles to the southwest is McAllen, Texas, a city of approximately 120,000; just south of McAllen, is Reynosa, Mexico, a city of one million. Tourism and agriculture have long been the two largest sectors of the Valley economy; however, manufacturing is gaining in importance throughout this international region. The area is distinctly bicultural, and many people speak both English and Spanish.
